Whether it be providing a
safe haven for victims of child abuse and domestic violence, or
assisting famiies struggling to meet basic life necessities such as
food, clothing, safe shelter, medications, and emotional support,
these "safety-net" services are important in order for a community to
be able to readily respond in times of emergency and crisis.
The Issues

At least 1,100 homeless
people on any given day in Greenville County.

Thirty percent of all 2004
Greenville County assaults were family assaults. There were 2,420
family assaults in Greenville County in 2004.

In 2003-04 there were 546
Greenville County cases of child abuse and neglect involving 920
children.
United Way Responds
-
United Way is providing ongoing funding of $1.15 million for emergency
assistance programs.

Through a $70,000 grant, United Way has partnered with the Upstate
Homeless Coalition to im plement a 10-year plan to end homelessness.

United Way programs provide shelter to over 400 victims of emotional
and physical abuse each year.

In
just the 3rd quarter of 2006, 328 individuals received support,
intervention, and case management services related to their being
victims of child abuse and/or sexual violence through United
Way-funded programs.
