Supports education, training, and job placement programs by selling gently used donated items. (affiliated agency, no allocation requested) Greenville Area Interfaith Hospitality Network (GAIHN) - 271-3424 Hospitality program to provide transitional housing and counseling for homeless families searching for emergency assistance and affordable, permanent homes. (Funding: $73,000) Greenville County Disabilities and Special Needs Board - 288-1907 Piedmont Skills program to provide vocational training to adults with mental retardation to increase daily living, emotional, cognitive and communication skills; Hollis Center program to provide early care and education for children with mental and developmental challenges. (Funding: $89,000) Greenville Free Medical Clinic - 232-1470 Community Clinic program to provide outpatient health services, including primary care, dental services, health education, and prescriptions to low-income residents who do not have medical coverage. Locations in Greenville, Greer and the Golden Strip. (Funding: $220,000) Greenville Literacy Association - 467-3456 English as Second Language and Adult Basic Literacy programs to teach basic reading, writing, and math skills to adults and families. (Funding: $267,000) Greenville Rape Crisis and Child Abuse Center - 331-0560 Prevention and Education program to provide age-appropriate educational and support services for victims of sexual violence and child abuse, as well as training for professionals on identification, prevention and treatment options; Treatment and Intervention program to provide therapy, crisis intervention, child medical services and legal advocacy. (Funding: $282,500) Greer Relief and Resources Agency - 848-5355 Emergency Assistance program to provide financial and in-kind help to Greer-area families in crisis for food, clothing, rent and utilities. (Funding: $43,000) Habitat for Humanity- 370-4787 Eliminating Substandard Housing program to build decent, affordable homes for low-income families in Greenville County and help the families prepare for homeownership. (Funding: $60,000) Hands on Greenville - 242-4224 Community Volunteer program that creates and organizes service projects allowing volunteers to serve individually or in groups. (Funding: $50,000) Homes of Hope - 269-4663 Affordable Housing program to provide counseling and case management to low-income families to move them to homeownership. (Funding: $80,000) Pendleton Place Children's Shelter – 467-3650 Children's Shelter to provide a temporary safe haven for children who suffer from parental abuse, neglect or abandonment; Smith House to provide an education and independent living program that teaches life skills for girls in the foster care system, ages 15 to 21. (Funding: $66,000) The Phoenix Center - 467-3790 Outpatient program to provide counseling and life skills services for adolescents who are dependent (or at-risk) on drugs and alcohol to break their addiction. (Funding: $60,000) Phillis Wheatley Association - 235-3411 After School program to provide youth with educational, recreational, life skills and character development activities, including Repertory Theater; Pre-School program to provide emotional, physical and cognitive development opportunities for at-risk children, ages 3-4. (Funding: $150,000) Pleasant Valley Connection – 236-0151 After School program to address educational needs, life skills and character development; Even Start Family Learning program to provide adult and early childhood education, parenting and parent/child literacy activities; Active Older Adult program to provide health seminars, wellness classes, nutritional meals and educational activities. (Funding: $54,000) The Speech, Hearing & Learning Center - 331-1401 Preschool Developmental Readiness program to help overcome developmental delays that prevent readiness to be successful in Kindergarten; Children's Academic Success program to provide evaluations of school-aged children and therapy to improve their ability to communicate, listen and learn; Adult Hearing program to provide auditory and rehabilitation services for seniors and adults. (Funding: $269,500) Sterling Hope Center - 349-0127 Youth Enrichment program to provide at-risk children with tutoring and social enrichment activities; Active Older Adults program to provide health screenings/education, congregate dining, and social activities to help seniors maintain a sense of independence and well-being. (Funding: $78,000) United Ministries - 232-6463 Adult Education program to help clients prepare for GED examination, increase their literacy, and enroll in postsecondary education; Employment Readiness program to provide job training and case management to eliminate barriers to employment; Emergency Assistance program to provide food, medicine, financial and emotional support to people in crisis; Place of Hope/Traveler's Aid program to provide financial assistance to help stranded individuals return home. (Funding: $322,000) Urban League of the Upstate - 244-3862 Economic Empowerment program to help individuals reach employment goals; Housing and Support Services program to help residents make informed housing decisions and provide emergency financial assistance to prevent eviction and foreclosure; Family Works program to provide after school tutorial services to children and college preparation, criminal intervention, teen pregnancy prevention and character-building services to teens. (Funding: $275,000) YMCA of Greater Greenville - 242-1111 Judson Preschool program to provide full-day preschool focused on increasing parental involvement in their children's development; Judson Youth Development program to provide after school services; Day Camp and After School Childcare program to equip youth with skills needed to succeed in life; Active Older Adult program to provide seniors with activities to promote physical, mental and spiritual well-being. (Funding: $196,000) YWCA - 467-3700 Child Development program to provide high quality early care and education services for children ages four months to four years; Facilities Partnership program that supports collocation of various services to prepare children for success in school and life. Community Initiatives
Workforce Development, a project identified by the Strengthening Families and Neighborhoods Impact Council in partnership with the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, received a funding recommendation to increase capacity by funding associate position on full-time basis. The purpose of this position is to facilitate improved linkage between available jobs in the local business community and the private, non-profit employment providers. This project focuses on integrating job skills training with job availability in efforts to strengthen the workforce development infrastructure in the community.
Greenville Dreams, a service provided by the Strengthening Families and Neighborhoods Impact Council to neighborhood associations in partnership with the City and County, received a funding recommendation to implement recommendations of the Affordable Housing Opportunity Assessment (completed in October, 2005). This neighborhood development initiative provides asset based training to neighborhood association residents to help build their capacity to revitalize, develop and sustain their own neighborhoods, and fund a portion of the Action Grants.
ServicePoint, an existing initiative for the Building A Healthy Community Impact Council, received one-time funding recommendation for a one year pilot project to develop a shared electronic referral system and database in order to better coordinate the health care services for the underserved in Greenville County that will increase access to timely health care services through a seamless system of care.
GIVING FundUnited Way will allocate $535,000 in 2007/08 to provide funding for new and innovative projects/ programs, initiatives that build the capacity of community partners to achieve strategic goals, emergency relief, and breakthrough opportunities. Examples of recent breakthrough initiatives include: a Housing Initiative to increase affordable housing production; a Dental Care Initiative for the medically underserved; and Graduate Greenville, a high school success partnership to increase graduation rates. |
