At United Way we support the core values of Parents as Teachers

  • The early years of a child's life are critical for optimal development and provide the foundation for success in school and in life.
  • Parents are their children's first and most influential teachers.
  • Established and emerging research should be the foundation of parent education and family support curricula, training, materials and services.
  • All young children and their families deserve the same opportunities to succeed, regardless of any demographic, geographic or economic considerations.
  • An understanding and appreciation of the history and traditions of diverse cultures is essential in serving families.

Parenting Resources are Available to Help

Parenting your child is probably the most important and challenging job you will ever have.  Our children are not born with “how-to” guides; however, today parents are not facing this challenge alone.  There are resources & community supports available to guide parents in the new millennium.  To access these resources, visit our Local Parenting Resources Page.

Every Child is "Born Learning"

There is so much every parent can do to help a child grow and thrive.  The research doesn't lie—children are literally “born learning.”  Further, the majority of all that a child learns happens before age 3, setting in motion the child's preparation for a successful future.  Everything we do with our children, every book we read, every activity we do, offers us the opportunity to teach our child.

For more information about how every child is “born learning,” visit www.bornlearning.org.

"Born Learning" is an educational campaign co-sponsored by United Way, Civitas and the Ad Council.
