United Way's African American Leadership Initiative was created in 1999 as a subcommittee of The Palmetto Society, United Way's leadership giving recognition group.

In 1999 African American leadership donors totaled 39 members contributing $60,848. In 2006, 136 members contributed $187,318. These leaders are an important part of caring for our community.

The purpose of the African American Leadership Initiative is to:

• Recognize the philanthropic efforts of African Americans in our community, specifically those
who contribute $1,000 or more annually through the United Way of Greenville County.

• Identify and cultivate African American leaders in our community who have the ability to give of their financial resources at the leadership level, and to give of their time to care for those in need.

• To identify volunteer leadership candidates for service opportunities in civic and non-profit
organizations.

Activities of African American Leadership:

• FANtastic Event:  Members and prospects bring portable fans with them to this event to donate to senior citizens in our community in need of cooling during summer months.
