Thumbs Up to the United Way of Greenville County for providing a little extra help to seven local agencies that provide emergency assistance in our community.

Another Thumbs Up to all the generous United Way donors who make these special emergency funds available by giving so faithfully to the United Way.

Over the past two years, the Greenville United Way has provided $150,000 in special emergency funds to the agencies that have seen a huge increase in demand because of the recession, according to a Greenville News story. Last week the United Way announced plans to give an additional $20,000 to the American Red Cross of the Upstate; the agency has responded to 20 separate incidents and given more than $25,000 in disaster assistance in just over a week’s time. The United Way also is giving special one-time emergency donations of $3,000 each to Foothills Family Resources, Golden Strip Emergency Relief and Resource Agency, Greer Relief and Resource Agency, Harvest Hope Food Bank, The Salvation Army and United Ministries.
