Are you unemployed now or facing unemployment or a layoff in the near future? There are many agencies that provide assistance with job-seeking skills and the resources to find employment.
What if my job is gone for good?
Begin by making realistic plans. Remember, finding a job is a full-time job. Plan a step-by-step approach to achieve your objective:
-
Explore where you want to go and what you want to do. This may be your opportunity to shift into a new or different type of work.
- Determine which careers fit your interests and are growing in this region. Ask yourself, “What is the potential for job openings? What are the qualifications? What is the salary and career advancement potential?”
- Inventory the skills you have and the skills you still need to develop.
- If you need job training, explore your options and begin making contacts to determine the training time commitment, costs, financial aid options, job placement assistance, etc.
- Research employers and network with your contacts. Follow up promptly on all leads.
- Individualize your cover letters and resumes, gearing them to the job for which you are applying. Prepare to send your information electronically as well as by mail.
- Prepare for interviews and follow up afterwards.
