United Way approves additional $25,000 for emergency assistance

In anticipation of another spike in demand for food, shelter, utility and other basic needs assistance during the winter months, United Way of Greenville County is allocating an additional $25,000 for emergency assistance programs at five local agencies.

United Way of Greenville County’s Board of Trustees voted Thursday to provide immediate one-time grants of $5,000 to Foothills Family Resources, Golden Strip Emergency Relief & Resource Agency, Greer Relief & Resources Agency, Salvation Army and United Ministries to help meet the increased demand typically experienced during the coldest months of the year.

“Thanks to the tremendous generosity of United Way donors, we are proud to be able to provide this additional financial support to many individuals and families still struggling during these difficult economic times,” said Ted Hendry, president of United Way of Greenville County.

This is the fourth consecutive year United Way has provided the extra grant dollars. Hendry said this additional help has been even more critical as local programs have seen increased levels of need, as well as cuts in federal and state funding for emergency assistance. In 2011, Greenville County saw its share of federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP) funds cut by approximately 39 percent, leaving 21 service providers to split $194,432 designated for food, shelter, rent/mortgage, and utility assistance.

“These additional United Way funds will ensure those who need us most can get the help they need to stay in their homes, keep the lights on, and put food on the table,” said Hendry.

Individuals in Greenville County in need of extra assistance this winter should call United Way’s 24-hour resource line, by dialing 2-1-1. Callers will be provided with information on local resources.
