United Way helps Scott Towers residents make transition to new housing
Facing the demolition of their current residence, some of the residents of Greenville’s Scott Towers will have the transition to new housing eased a bit thanks to contributors to United Way of Greenville County.
On Thursday, United Way of Greenville County’s board of trustees agreed to provide a one-time grant of $12,500 to the Housing Authority of the City of Greenville to help 50 elderly and disabled residents of Scott Towers pay a $250 utility deposit at their new residence.
Last summer, the Housing Authority of the City of Greenville (HACG) received a recommendation from a team of local architects and engineers to demolish the high-rise apartment building due to safety concerns inside the aging building. HACG requested United Way’s help in identifying local nonprofit partners with the expertise to prepare residents for the transition to alternate housing, including transportation for residents as they visit potential housing sites. While assisting with the logistics of the transition, United Way learned approximately 50 Scott Towers residents would be unable to pay a $250 utility deposit required at their new residence.
“United Way is proud to be able to step up and help facilitate the transition to new housing for our neighbors in need,” said Ted Hendry, president of United Way of Greenville County. “The generosity shown by our supporters will make life a little more comfortable for these residents of Scott Towers as they move into a new home.”
