Two United Way organizations announced today that they have joined forces to provide free tax preparation services to Upstate residents.

United Way of Greenville County and United Way of Pickens County have partnered to form the United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Collaborative.

Sponsored by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Bank of America, VITA provides free income tax preparation assistance to individuals and families with a household income of less than $49,000 a year.

Additionally, VITA’s volunteers help taxpayers maximize their potential tax returns by ensuring all of the tax credits and deductions for which they qualify are claimed.

Volunteers for the local VITA Collaborative and its 30-plus partners are now operating 11 tax preparation sites in Greenville County.

The Greenville County sites are Lakeview Middle School, Sargent Branch Library, Hughes Main Library, Fountain Inn Library, Greer Relief and Resources Agency, Simpsonville Center for Community Services, Taylors First Baptist Church, United Ministries - Learning Center, Nicholtown Community Center, YWCA of Greenville and Greenville Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Six sites in Pickens County will open Monday (Jan. 24). Those locations are Clemson Community Care, Inc., Pickens County Seniors Unlimited, Pickens County YMCA, The ARC of Pickens County, Hampton Memorial Library (Pickens), and Village Branch Library (Pickens).

Appointments are now being scheduled for all sites via United Way’s 2-1-1 resource line. In addition to appointment scheduling, 2-1-1 call specialists inform taxpayers of the documentation required for tax preparation, as well as the latest site locations and hours of operation.

Once an appointment is scheduled, taxpayers will be assisted at the site by one of the program’s IRS-certified volunteer tax preparers. All taxes are filed electronically.
