For many people, philanthropic giving is a lifelong commitment that provides both personal and financial benefits. Through United Way of Greenville County’s planned giving program, you can create a plan that benefits you and your family today, while ensuring vital human care programs are available for generations to come.

What Is a Planned Gift?

A charitable planned gift is the result of careful and thoughtful structuring of one’s asset management plan to benefit a charitable organization. Such a gift is commonly asset based rather than from income and often involves a planning process utilizing the services of third-party professionals; i.e., estate and tax planning attorneys. Planned gifts are usually irrevocable and afford the donor important tax benefits.

United Way’s Poinsett Society

Donors who have chosen to include United Way in their wills or other estate plans are honored and recognized as members of United Way’s Poinsett Society. United Way offers a number of giving options that will enable you to structure a gift according to your specific needs and interests. Whether it is a cash contribution, a bequest by will, a life insurance policy, a retirement plan, a charitable trust, or a gift through appreciated securities and real estate, Poinsett Society members take advantage of a special opportunity to shape the future of our community. Poinsett Society donors committing $25,000 or more are recognized on the Palmetto Society Fountain, located at the corner of Court St. and Main Street in Downtown Greenville.

Endow Your Annual Gift

United Way suggests you consider a planned gift through your estate equal to 20 times your annual gift. For example, a $2,000 annual gift multiplied by 20 would equal a $40,000 gift from your estate. With a 5 percent return on investment, you create a lasting legacy.
