Our Work

As part of its commitment to addressing key community issues, United Way of Greenville County is developing strategies to positively impact the financial stability of our citizens. The goal is to help move working people towards greater economic self-sufficiency and away from the safety net services that are used during crisis situations.

One of the first initiatives toward this goal is United Way Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), an IRS-certified program which provides free income tax preparation assistance to individuals and families with a low-to-moderate income (defined as having a household income of less than $49,000).

Many in our community don’t have access to affordable tax preparation services or are unaware of programs like Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) that could put thousands of dollars back in their hands and into our local economy. VITA helps taxpayers obtain eligible tax credits and deductions, especially EITC, Child Tax Credit, Education Tax Credits and Child Care tax deductions. Anyone who files a basic tax return can have taxes prepared at one of the VITA site

If you file a basic tax return, please visit one of the locations to have your tax returns prepared FREE of charge. We have established sites all across Greenville County, each staffed by volunteer tax preparers who are certified by the Internal Revenue Service. All taxes are filed electronically.

The VITA program proves that a small investment by United Way and the community can reap amazing rewards. The VITA program continues to see significant growth and generate a substantial return back into the Greenville County community.

In 2009, the VITA program helped Greenville County taxpayers:

    • File over 1,700 returns
    • Receive $462,478 in Earned Income Tax Credits
    • Receive $217, 058 in Child Tax Credits
    • Receive $1,371,394 in total refunds
    • Save more than $250,000 in tax preparation fees
