United Way of Greenville County’s “Be a Book Bunny” project is putting new books in the hands of more than 1,800 children this spring. The goal is to help children build personal libraries, spread cheer and encourage healthy reading habits.
Employees at 61 companies and organizations volunteered to fill tote bags with new, age-appropriate books and other small treats for children served by United Way partner programs.
“Nearly two-thirds of low-income children do not have any books in their home," said Meghan Barp, president and CEO of United Way of Greenville County. "We want to change that. Having access to good books at home and being able to read at grade level is important to a child’s success in school, now and in the future. We are so grateful to all of the volunteers and companies for joining us to improve early literacy and school readiness in Greenville County.”
The tote bags are being delivered this week to children served by 18 United Way partner programs, reaching more than 1,800 children.
