Success story — Greenville County Schools

From ninth grade to career-ready

59 ninth-graders. 55 industry certifications. One program changing what's possible.

What does it look like when a ninth-grader earns an industry certification before they’ve finished their first year of high school? In Greenville County, it looks like 55 students, 41 of them living in poverty, walking away from the Heavy Metal program with credentials in welding, machine tools, automation, cybersecurity, construction, and diesel technology.

Funded by United Way of Greenville County, Heavy Metal is built on a simple but powerful idea: treat students like professionals from day one. By framing participation as a part-time job, the program builds more than skills. It builds work ethic, confidence, and a sense of what’s possible.

For many of these students, this program is the first step toward a sustainable career and away from the cycle of poverty their families have known.
