Nearly 4,000 Greenville County students in kindergarten through eighth grade will start the school year with a new backpack and supplies thanks to United Way of Greenville County’s 18th annual School Tools supply drive.
Backpacks and bags filled with paper, pencils, markers and binders were distributed to families Saturday morning at an event hosted at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena in downtown Greenville.
Families lined up early Saturday morning to receive the supplies, which were donated by volunteers at more than 100 Greenville County companies and organizations. The volunteers filled School Tools bags with grade level-specific school supplies, including all the basics to help students start the school year ready to succeed.
In addition to school supplies, each student was provided with free books as part of a partnership effort with Bon Secours St. Francis Health System and Read Greenville, a community-wide awareness program focused on the importance of reading.
Individual donations and corporate contributions from Duke Energy Foundation and Gateway Wealth Solutions Raymond James provided an additional $7,000 to support this year’s effort.
“Community support for this year’s School Tools project has been outstanding,” said Ted Hendry, president of United Way of Greenville County. “We are so thankful to all of the individuals and companies who provided school supplies. Their efforts and generosity will go a long way in helping to ensure that students throughout Greenville County begin the school year with the best possible start.”
