United Way of Greenville County is seeking volunteers to help provide free tax preparation services during the upcoming tax season.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, is a United Way financial stability program that offers free tax preparation and filing services to individuals and families with annual household income of $60,000 or less. IRS trained and certified volunteers ensure that participants receive all eligible tax credits and deductions. Volunteers are the key to success of the VITA program. Last year, nearly 400 volunteers contributed more than 8,000 hours of donated time (estimated value of $168,000) to assist members of the community. Over 12,100 individuals and families saved $2.4 million in tax preparation fees during the 2018 tax season.
With over 50 locations across the Upstate of South Carolina, volunteers can serve at any location that is most convenient to them. Since site hours vary by location, volunteers are able to commit as much time as they wish during the season. There is no minimum time requirement that volunteers must participate. No prior experience is necessary and training is free. There are a variety of ways to become involved as a VITA volunteer including Intake Specialists (Greeters), Tax Preparer, Site Coordinator, and Interpreters. Attorneys, CPAs, and Enrolled Agents can also receive up to 18 Continuing Educations Credits for free by becoming a volunteer tax preparer.
