Volunteer Spotlight: Adriana Ramsey

As we kick off National Volunteer Month, we’re shining the spotlight on a handful of United Way volunteers who have been instrumental in providing relief and moving our community forward.

Today, we hear from Adriana Ramsey, a former AmeriCorps Upstate member who currently serves as a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer. Adriana’s assistance, especially her work with Spanish-speaking individuals, has been a tremendous asset for our VITA program and our community at large.

How long have you been volunteering with United Way of Greenville County?

I began volunteering with United Way in 2014 as an AmeriCorps Upstate member.

Can you tell us about the need for Spanish-speaking volunteers?

Nearly 10% of Greenville’s population is Hispanic; consequently, the need for more Spanish-speaking volunteers is evident. An example of this is during tax season: With more trained tax preparers and/or interpreters, many more Hispanics with limited resources will be able to get the assistance they need, while at the same time retaining the full tax refund to improve their financial situation.

How has volunteerism impacted the way you view our community?

As a volunteer, the privilege of building relationships with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures has changed my perspective in a very positive way. It gives me an outlet to connect, learn, and relate on a personal level.

What have you learned from your experience working with our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program?

My experience with the VITA program has provided me with not only the satisfaction of contributing to the community but has also allowed me to gain work skills that I use with my present job.

Do you have a favorite moment from your experience volunteering with us?

My favorite moment as a volunteer took place when I served as an AmeriCorps member to help a family in need with building a new home. We joined Habitat for Humanity for a day with this project and it was a very rewarding and fun experience.

What would you tell someone interested in serving with United Way?

If someone were interested in serving, I would tell him or her that this organization is a great opportunity to make a difference in your community, as well as in your personal life. Serving with United Way is a chance to invest in your personal and professional growth. Now is the time, change the world and be changed forever!
