Why the Opportunity Center?

United Way of Greenville County is dedicated to building economic mobility in Greenville County. Nearly 60,000 of our neighbors live in poverty, struggling daily to meet basic needs like housing, food, transportation and healthcare. Establishing the Opportunity Center is essential to helping our community become a place where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Our goal (and how we will measure success) is helping each center participant meet these key financial stability metrics:

  • Earn a livable income that reaches the Self-Sufficiency Standard ($56,000 for a family of four in Greenville County)
  • Achieve a good credit score of 620 or above
  • Own a checking and savings account
  • Decrease debt below 40% of monthly income
  • Establish savings equal to three months of living expenses
  • Establish emergency savings in the amount of $1,000

Thanks to support from Bank of America, TD Bank, Wells Fargo and others, as well as individual gifts from United Way donors, families will have opportunities to participate in matched savings programs, home down payment assistance, small loan support, guidance on how to save for important wealth-building purchases like a car or home, and learning how to avoid the pitfalls of predatory lending.
