Member Endorsements

We decided many years ago to bequest a gift to United Way of Greenville County because of our commitment to this organization and a firm belief in its continued ability to serve in a leadership capacity in our community and strengthen our non-profit capabilities and resources. While the dynamics of the non-profit ecosystem have changed considerably since the time of our decision, our confidence has been reaffirmed in recent years by United Way’s initiatives in education and development of its OnTrack program. Looking ahead, we will continue to support United Way’s efforts to strengthen nonprofit capabilities that drive both improved economic mobility and measurable progress in diversity, equity and inclusion in our community.

Karen & Jim Akerhielm

When we made our life insurance gift in 2013, the process provided us with an easy way to invest in the United Way Endowment that could help insure the future for our community. There are many reasons why, but, primarily, we see the wonderful work that United Way does and their ability to leverage our dollars with their dollars and spend them with strategic intent. We cannot begin to do the same level of due diligence that United Way’s staff and volunteers do to help determine need and evaluate progress. As United Way prepares for their 100th anniversary in 2022, the legacy of those who helped get it started remains alive and well. We plan to be part of their work in this next century and hope that you will be part of it, too.

One of the things that makes Greenville a great place to live is the continuous commitment of its leaders to give back to the community. Through my 20-plus years of working with United Way, I have seen first-hand the passion of the organization as it works with community volunteers to help those in need. My family has always supported United Way and we saw the planned giving opportunity as a way to continue our support into future generations.
