Giving kids the tools they need to succeed in school—and in life. That’s the ultimate goal of United Way School Tools, a program designed to give students the best possible start to the school year.
We understand the needs of students, schools and teachers are changing in the age of COVID-19 and e-learning, and we want to do our part to help ensure that each student has the tools they require to be successful in school. That's why we are reimagining our traditional School Tools event this year and taking the program virtual!
From funding Wi-Fi hotspots and virtual shopping in support of teachers' out-of-pocket expenses to collecting supplies for our community drop-off days, there are plenty of safe ways to support our students and their families this year:
MAKE A FINANCIAL GIFT
The most prevalent need we have identified going into the 2020–2021 school year is mobile Wi-Fi access. Students who lack consistent Wi-Fi access are at an educational disadvantage as this pandemic continues to impact our community. With Greenville County Schools spearheading this initiative, United Way is committed to supplementing their efforts by raising funds to purchase mobile Wi-Fi hotspots for students to check out from schools. Each hotspot costs roughly $16 per month (or nearly $200 per year), but any gift will help us meet the needs of Greenville County students and their families. Click here to make a gift.
Another way to support our schools and teachers is to purchase items to support their classrooms. Teachers spend an average of $500–$1,000 out of pocket to purchase supplies for their classroom annually. After a tough end to the 2019–2020 school year, we want to surround our dedicated teachers with support this fall. You can browse virtual Amazon and Walmart wishlists to purchase much needed supplies to support our teachers, and ultimately, our students. Please list your name, company and email address in the gift note section on Amazon.
PROVIDE SCHOOL SUPPLIES
If you've participated in School Tools in the past, you know how special it can be to collect supplies for students and their families across our community. This year, there will be two opportunities to donate school supplies. In addition to purchasing items from our Amazon and Walmart wishlists, which will be distributed to Greenville County Schools, you can also collect and drop off items in person at one of our socially distant drop-off days on August 12 or August 19 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the United Way of Greenville County office (105 Edinburgh Ct, Greenville, SC 29607). Please wear a face covering and help us stay safe by practicing social distancing.
GET HELP WITH SUPPLIES
If your family is in need of supplies, please contact our United Way of Greenville County Resources Line by dialing 2-1-1. Help is available 24/7, and our operators will be able connect you with supplies locally.
THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING GREENVILLE COUNTY STUDENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES!
