United Way of Greenville County expands volunteer opportunities to meet community needs during COVID-19

United Way of Greenville County has expanded its volunteer recruitment resource for people looking to serve the community during the spread of COVID-19. United Way Hands On Greenville’s website, handsongreenville.org, is a collection of all current volunteer needs, with a dedicated section for groups needing help during the pandemic. The volunteer needs list is updated daily and includes some virtual volunteering opportunities.

To help prevent the spread of the virus, United Way of Greenville County has also provided a list of guidelines for volunteers to follow to ensure the safety of everyone involved. Many nonprofit organizations have shared lists of items they would like to have donated, with drop off instructions included.

“Greenville County has a reputation for its generous, giving spirit, and we know now, during these uncertain and challenging times, we will come together even stronger to support our most vulnerable neighbors,” said Meghan Barp, president and CEO of United Way of Greenville County. “There are a wide range of volunteer opportunities available, many of which require no personal interaction. We are grateful for everyone who has already stepped up to support our community when we need it most.”

United Way of Greenville County has also established a COVID-19 Community Relief Fund in partnership with the Community Foundation of Greenville, the F.W. Symmes Foundation, Hollingsworth Funds, John I. Smith Foundation, and the Jolley Foundation. Many caring individuals and families have already contributed to provide assistance to Greenville County’s most vulnerable population during the spread of the novel coronavirus.

This effort, in concert with partners such as Greenville County Schools and others from across the region, will coordinate with social service organizations and businesses focused on supporting children and families, hourly wage earners, workers in the gig economy, older adults, people living with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities.

Donations to support the COVID-19 Community Relief Fund can be made securely online at www.unitedwaygc.org/response.
